How Thick Should a Concrete Slab Be?

Four inches is the residential standard and it covers most of what a homeowner pours: patios, shed pads, walkways, interior floors. Five to six inches is the answer wherever vehicles park or heavy equipment sits. The thickness you choose changes the concrete volume in a straight line — a fifth inch on a 20 by 20 slab is another cubic yard and a quarter — so it is worth getting right before the truck is ordered rather than after.

Where the four-inch standard comes from

The International Residential Code sets a minimum of 3.5 inches for a concrete floor slab on grade, and the industry rounds that to a nominal four inches because that is what a 2x4 screed rail gives you and what every ready-mix dispatcher assumes when you order. A four-inch slab on a properly compacted base carries foot traffic, furniture, appliances and the occasional pallet of tile without complaint.

Four inches is a floor thickness, not a foundation thickness. It assumes the loads are spread across the slab rather than concentrated on it, and it assumes the ground underneath is doing its share of the work. Both of those assumptions are worth checking before you accept the number.

When four inches is not enough

Vehicles are the usual reason to go thicker. A driveway or garage floor that takes passenger cars is normally poured at four inches with a stronger mix, but five inches is cheap insurance and five to six is standard where a pickup, a work van or a trailer is parked regularly. Anything that sees a loaded dump truck, an RV or a boat on a tandem-axle trailer should be six inches, and the joints should be spaced tighter to match.

Shop and barn slabs are the other case. A slab carrying racking, a lift, or pallets of stock is not carrying a spread load — it is carrying four point loads under each post, and those punch through a thin slab regardless of how much mesh is in it. Six inches is the working minimum for a shop floor, and a lift needs an engineered pad under its posts on top of that.

Frost matters at the edges rather than in the field. In a climate that freezes, a slab that supports a wall needs its perimeter carried below the local frost depth, either as a separate footing or as a thickened monolithic edge. The middle of the slab stays four inches; the edge does the structural work.

What an extra inch actually costs

Concrete volume scales directly with thickness, so the arithmetic is easy and the number is larger than most people expect. A 20 by 20 foot slab is 400 square feet. At four inches that is 4.9 cubic yards; at five inches it is 6.2; at six it is 7.4. Going from four to six inches on that slab is half again as much concrete, and on a small pour it can also push you across a short-load fee threshold or into a second truck.

What does not scale is the rest of the job. The forms, the base, the labour to place and finish, and the cost of getting a truck to your address are all much the same at four inches as at six. That is why the cost per square foot of a thicker slab rises far less than the volume does — and why, if you are undecided, pouring the thicker slab now is almost always cheaper than replacing a cracked thin one later.

Thickened edges and turndowns

A monolithic slab — the one poured in a single operation with its own footing at the perimeter — is a four-inch field with a thickened edge running around it, typically 12 to 24 inches deep and 12 to 16 inches wide depending on frost depth and what the edge carries. That edge is where the reinforcement concentrates and where a surprising share of the concrete goes.

When you estimate a monolithic slab as a flat four inches, you undercount. On a 24 by 24 garage pad, a 16 inch deep by 12 inch wide turndown around the perimeter adds roughly a cubic yard on its own — enough that the truck arrives short. Any calculator that offers a thickened-edge option is worth using for exactly this reason.

The base matters more than the last inch

A four-inch slab on four inches of compacted crushed stone outperforms a six-inch slab poured on soft, uncompacted fill. Concrete is strong in compression and weak in tension: the moment the ground under it settles unevenly, the slab spans the gap and cracks from the bottom up, and no reasonable thickness prevents that.

The code expects a base course of clean graded aggregate under an interior slab, and good practice extends that to exterior flatwork on anything but well-drained sandy soil. Compact it in lifts, wet it if it is dusty, and check it with a plate compactor rather than a boot. Then place a vapour retarder under an interior slab that will receive flooring.

Reinforcement follows the same logic. Mesh or a rebar grid does not stop a slab from cracking; it holds the crack tight when it happens and keeps the two sides at the same elevation. Size the grid for the slab you are pouring, and put it on chairs at mid-depth — mesh lying on the ground does nothing at all.

Control joints, in one paragraph

Concrete shrinks as it cures and it will crack; joints decide where. Cut them to a quarter of the slab depth — one inch deep on a four-inch slab — within the first day, and space them in feet at no more than two to three times the thickness in inches. That gives roughly 8 to 12 feet on a four-inch slab and 12 to 15 feet on a six-inch one, in panels as close to square as the shape allows.

Common questions

Is a 4 inch slab enough for a garage?
For passenger cars on a well-compacted base, yes — four inches with a 3,000 to 4,000 psi mix is common practice. Five to six inches is the better choice if a pickup, a work van, a trailer or a lift will ever be on it, and the extra concrete is a small fraction of the total job cost.
How much concrete does an extra inch of thickness add?
One inch over 100 square feet is 0.31 cubic yards. On a 400 square foot slab an extra inch is about 1.23 cubic yards, and on a 1,200 square foot shop floor it is 3.7 cubic yards — often the difference between one truck and two.
Do I need rebar in a 4 inch slab?
Not always, but it is cheap and it changes how the slab fails rather than whether it cracks. Welded wire mesh or a #3 to #4 bar grid at 16 to 18 inch spacing, set at mid-depth on chairs, keeps cracks tight and the surface level. Any slab carrying vehicles should have a bar grid rather than mesh.
How thick should a concrete patio be?
Four inches, on four inches of compacted base. A patio carries almost no load, so thickness is not what protects it — drainage, base preparation and jointing are. Thicken it only where a hot tub, an outdoor kitchen or a vehicle will sit.
Can I pour a 2 inch topping over an existing slab?
A bonded topping of two inches or less is a repair, not a structural slab, and it needs a properly prepared and bonded surface to stay put. If the slab underneath is cracked or moving, the topping will mirror it within a season. Pour an unbonded overlay at four inches or replace the slab.
