The honest answer to "bags or a truck" is a number, and it moves with your volume, your local short-load fee and how many people you can put on shovels. Below about a cubic yard bags almost always win; above a pallet they almost never do. This prices both against your own figures and tells you what the cheaper option costs in hours.

The formula
Bag count = volume in cubic feet ÷ bag yield, rounded up. Ready-mix cost = the greater of your volume or the supplier minimum, times the yard price, plus a short-load fee if you are under the minimum. Mixing time assumes about four minutes per bag per person, working steadily.

Choosing materials
- The short-load fee is the whole story on small pours. It is often $100 to $200, which on a half-yard pour more than doubles the cost of the concrete itself.
- Mixing rate is the number people underestimate. Four minutes a bag sounds slow until you have done forty of them, and it does not include the wheelbarrow trip.
- Bagged mix and ready-mix are not the same product. Ready-mix is ordered to a specified strength and can be air-entrained for freeze-thaw; bagged mix is what it is.
- A truck gives you a continuous pour. Bags mixed in batches over hours risk cold joints, which is a permanent weak plane in the concrete.
- 80 lb bags cost less per cubic foot than 60 lb. If you are working alone or lifting into a trench, the 60 lb bag is often worth the premium anyway.

What is a short-load fee?
A charge ready-mix suppliers add when you order less than their minimum, typically one cubic yard. It compensates them for sending a truck that comes back mostly full, and it commonly runs $100 to $200 on top of the concrete.
How many bags of concrete in a cubic yard?
Forty-five 80 lb bags, or sixty 60 lb bags. That is 3,600 lb of material either way, which is worth picturing before you commit to carrying it.
How long does it take to mix a pallet of concrete?
A pallet of 80 lb bags is 42 bags, about three hours for two people working steadily with a mixer, and considerably longer by hand in a tub. That estimate assumes nothing goes wrong and nobody stops.
Can I mix bags and ready-mix on the same pour?
You can, but do not plan to. Different mixes reach strength differently and the joint between them is a weak plane. Keep bags as a backup for a small overage, not as a supplement to a short order.
Does bagged concrete reach the same strength as ready-mix?
Standard bagged mix reaches about 4,000 psi at 28 days when mixed correctly, which is comparable to a typical residential ready-mix order. The difference is consistency: a truck mixes to a spec, and a homeowner adding water by eye does not.
