The formula

Sections = 100 ft ÷ 8 ft post spacing = 13, rounded up. Posts = sections + 1, plus one per gate. Post depth is a third of the fence height, so a 6 ft fence takes 8 ft posts with 2 ft in the ground. Two 50 lb bags of fast-set per post.

Choosing materials

  • Fourteen posts, not thirteen. The closing post at the end of the run is the one people forget, and it means a second trip.
  • Eight-foot post spacing matches stock panel width. Six-foot spacing costs a third more in posts and concrete and holds up considerably better in wind — worth it on an exposed run.
  • About 28 bags of concrete for 100 feet. That is over 1,400 lb, so plan how it gets from the store to the holes.
  • Set the ends and any corner first, string a line, and set everything else to it. Error accumulates down a 100 ft run and by the last section it is visible from the street.
  • Confirm the property line before the first hole. A 100 ft fence on the wrong side of a line is a survey, a letter from a neighbor, and a rebuild.
