The formula
Sections = 100 ft ÷ 8 ft post spacing = 13, rounded up. Posts = sections + 1, plus one per gate. Post depth is a third of the fence height, so a 6 ft fence takes 8 ft posts with 2 ft in the ground. Two 50 lb bags of fast-set per post.

Choosing materials
- Fourteen posts, not thirteen. The closing post at the end of the run is the one people forget, and it means a second trip.
- Eight-foot post spacing matches stock panel width. Six-foot spacing costs a third more in posts and concrete and holds up considerably better in wind — worth it on an exposed run.
- About 28 bags of concrete for 100 feet. That is over 1,400 lb, so plan how it gets from the store to the holes.
- Set the ends and any corner first, string a line, and set everything else to it. Error accumulates down a 100 ft run and by the last section it is visible from the street.
- Confirm the property line before the first hole. A 100 ft fence on the wrong side of a line is a survey, a letter from a neighbor, and a rebuild.

How many posts for a 100 ft fence?
Fourteen at 8 ft spacing — thirteen sections plus a closing post — and one more for each gate. At 6 ft spacing it rises to eighteen.
How many bags of concrete for 100 ft of fence?
About 28 to 30 bags of 50 lb fast-set, at two per post for a 4x4 in a 10 in hole. Gate posts in wider holes take three or four each.
What size posts for a 6 ft fence?
4x4 pressure-treated, 8 ft long, with 2 ft in the ground. Use 6x6 for gate posts and for corner posts on a long run — they take side loads the line posts do not.
Is wood or vinyl fence cheaper?
Wood is roughly half the price up front. Vinyl needs no staining or board replacement, so past about 12 to 15 years it is usually cheaper to have owned. Over a 5 year horizon, wood wins.
Do I need a permit for a 6 ft fence?
Many jurisdictions allow 6 ft in a back yard without one but restrict front-yard height to 3 or 4 ft. Above 6 ft almost always needs a permit. HOAs often have their own rules on style and colour.
