The formula

An acre is 43,560 ft². For a rectangle with a long-to-short side ratio r, the short side is √(area ÷ r) and the perimeter is 2 × (short + short × r). A square acre is 208.7 ft on a side, giving 835 ft of perimeter.

Choosing materials

  • Shape matters more than size. A 4:1 lot needs about 25% more fence than a square lot of identical acreage — that is hundreds of feet and thousands of dollars for the same land.
  • At this scale chain link is usually the only affordable choice for a full perimeter. Wood at 835 ft is a five-figure material order before labor.
  • Consider fencing only what you need. Most people fence a yard within the property rather than the property line, and that decision often halves the run.
  • Rural perimeter fencing frequently uses woven wire or barbed wire on T-posts at a fraction of these prices. If you are enclosing pasture rather than a yard, price that instead.
  • Corners take braced assemblies, not single posts, on any long run under tension. Budget a braced corner at every direction change.

In 4 ft chain link, materials typically run $2,500 to $4,500 for a square acre. In 6 ft wood privacy, $12,000 to $19,000. Installed, roughly double either. Shape and terrain move both figures substantially.

How many posts to fence an acre?

About 105 posts at 8 ft spacing around a square acre, plus one per gate and braced assemblies at each corner. At 6 ft spacing it rises to about 140.

Why does lot shape change the cost so much?

Because perimeter does not scale with area. A square encloses the most area per foot of boundary; every departure from square adds fence without adding land. A 4:1 lot costs 25% more to enclose than a square one.

Should I fence the property line or just the yard?

For most people, just the yard. It is usually a fraction of the perimeter, it avoids property line disputes and surveys, and it puts the fence where you actually use it.

What is the cheapest way to fence acreage?

Woven wire or barbed wire on T-posts, which is what agricultural fencing uses and costs a fraction of chain link. It contains livestock and marks a boundary; it does nothing for privacy or for keeping a dog in.
