The formula
Built height = exposed height plus a buried course. Blocks = (50 ft × built height) ÷ block face area, which is 1.5 blocks per square foot of wall face with a common 12x8 in block. Drainage stone is a 12 in wide zone the full height, converted to tons at 105 lb per cubic foot.

Over the 4 ft threshold — engineered design, permit, and geogrid layers tied back into the slope. A different job with a different budget.
Choosing materials
- Under 4 feet exposed, on level ground, with nothing loading the top: no engineering, usually no permit, no geogrid. Cross any one of those lines and the job changes character completely.
- About 5 tons of stone for base and drainage. That is a delivered truckload, and it has to be dumped somewhere you can wheelbarrow from.
- The first course takes half the total build time and decides everything above it. Level, fully bedded on compacted base, checked in both directions — every millimetre of error multiplies up the wall.
- Three hundred blocks at roughly 25 lb each is nearly four tons of block, handled twice. Have the pallets dropped as close to the wall as the truck can get.
- Terracing two 18 in walls instead of one 3 ft wall is often easier, looks better, and needs no more material — the two walls just have to be far enough apart not to load each other.
