Stone veneer is ordered in two different units — flats by the square foot and corners by the linear foot — and corners cost roughly twice as much. Measuring them separately before ordering is the difference between one delivery and two. This works out both, plus the mortar, lath and weather barrier behind them.

Assumptions used

These are the numbers behind the result. Where one of them is soft, the cost range widens rather than pretending to a precision the data does not have.

Stone veneer flat box coverage
10 ft²

Stone veneer corner box coverage

Corners are sold separately and cost roughly double per foot. Measure them first.

The formula

Net area = wall area − openings. Corner pieces wrap onto the face as they turn, so they cover about 0.5 ft² of flat area per linear foot — that comes off the flat requirement. Flat boxes = flat area ÷ 10 ft² per box. Corner boxes = corner feet ÷ 6 lf per box. Mortar covers about 25 ft² per bag across scratch coat and setting bed.

Worked examples

Front elevation, 240 ft² with 30 ft² of windows

Wall area (square feet): 240 Opening area (square feet): 30 Outside corners (linear feet): 24 Waste: 15

About 23 flat boxes and 5 corner boxes. The corners are a fifth of the material cost on a wall this size.

Chimney chase, 90 ft² with heavy corners

Wall area (square feet): 90 Opening area (square feet): 0 Outside corners (linear feet): 48 Waste: 15

A chase is nearly all corner. Corner boxes outweigh the flats here, which is why chimneys cost far more per square foot than a flat wall.

Wainscot band, 120 ft² with no corners

Wall area (square feet): 120 Opening area (square feet): 0 Outside corners (linear feet): 0 Waste: 15

Flat only, so the cheapest possible veneer geometry. About 14 boxes and 5 bags of mortar.

Choosing materials

  • Order corners first and separately. They are the constraint on the job, they cost about double per foot, and a wall stopped waiting for corner boxes is a wall with scaffolding rented by the day.
  • Two layers of weather-resistive barrier over the sheathing, then metal lath, then a scratch coat. Veneer stuck directly to sheathing traps water, and the resulting rot is invisible until the wall is opened.
  • Manufactured veneer weighs about 10 lb per square foot and needs no separate ledger. Natural thin stone runs 13 to 18 lb and heavy full-bed stone needs a supporting ledge — check which one you are buying.
  • Dry-lay a few square yards on the ground first and mix boxes as you go. Stone from a single box is often the same handful of molds, and laying box by box produces visible repetition on the wall.
  • Leave a weep screed at the bottom and keep the veneer clear of grade by a few inches. Stone in contact with soil wicks water up behind the barrier.

Common questions

How much stone veneer do I need?

Measure flat area in square feet and outside corners in linear feet, separately. Subtract openings, then take about 0.5 ft² off the flat area for every linear foot of corner, since corner pieces wrap onto the face. Add 10 to 15% waste.

How much does a box of stone veneer cover?

A flat box typically covers 10 square feet and a corner box about 6 linear feet, though it varies by manufacturer and profile. Check the box before ordering — a 8 ft² box changes your count by a fifth.

Why do corner pieces cost so much more?

They are moulded or cut as a returning L-shape, which uses more material and more handling, and they are sold by the linear foot rather than by area. Expect roughly double the cost per foot of coverage.

What goes behind stone veneer?

Two layers of weather-resistive barrier over the sheathing, metal lath fastened into the framing, then a scratch coat of mortar. That assembly gives water a drainage path. Veneer applied without it will rot the wall behind it.

Manufactured or natural stone veneer?

Manufactured is lighter, cheaper, consistent, and easier to install. Natural thin stone looks better up close and never repeats, but costs more, weighs more and needs more skill to lay well. Both install over the same lath and scratch coat.

Can I install stone veneer myself?

Yes, on a small area like a wainscot or a chimney chase. It is slow, heavy work and the pattern is easy to get wrong. The barrier and lath detailing behind it matters more than the stonework and is the part worth getting right.
