Carpet vs Luxury Vinyl Plank
Luxury vinyl plank costs more than mid-grade carpet installed, lasts two to three times as long, and is the better answer in every room where water, pets or traffic are involved. Carpet is cheaper up front, warmer and quieter, and it remains the right choice in bedrooms and on stairs. Neither answer is universal, which is why most houses end up with both.

The cost gap is smaller than it looks
Carpet is priced per square yard or per square foot with pad and installation often quoted separately, and a cheap carpet with a cheap pad is the least expensive way to cover a floor. Vinyl plank costs more per square foot but a click-together floating floor is fast to install and needs no adhesive, so the labour line is lower than for glue-down or for stretched carpet.
The gap closes further over time. Carpet in a hallway or a family room is worn out in five to ten years; the same area in vinyl plank is still serviceable at twenty. Costing the two over the period you intend to own the house, rather than at purchase, changes the ranking in most rooms.
Where each one clearly wins
Vinyl plank wins anywhere water is plausible: kitchens, bathrooms, laundries, basements and entryways. A waterproof core and a sealed surface mean a dishwasher leak is an inconvenience rather than a floor replacement, and that single property is why it has taken over the ground floor of so many houses.
Carpet wins in bedrooms and on stairs. It is warmer, it is much quieter, and on stairs it is genuinely safer underfoot than a hard surface. Stairs are also where vinyl plank is most difficult and most expensive to install well, since every tread needs a nosing and the labour is slow.
Basements deserve a note. Vinyl plank over a concrete slab is normally fine, but the slab must be dry and flat: moisture testing first, and a levelling compound if the slab is out of tolerance. Carpet over a damp slab is a mould problem waiting to happen.
The subfloor decides how it turns out
This is the difference nobody budgets for. Carpet and its pad hide a multitude of small subfloor sins — a slightly cupped board, a shallow dip, a proud fastener. A thin floating plank floor telegraphs all of them: dips become soft spots that click underfoot, and a proud screw head becomes a visible bump and eventually a worn patch.
Manufacturers specify flatness tolerances, commonly around 3/16 inch over 10 feet, and meeting them on an older floor can mean sanding high spots and skim-coating low ones. Price that work before comparing quotes, because a vinyl quote that assumes a flat subfloor and a carpet quote that does not are not comparable numbers.
Result
Ground floor, hallways, anywhere with water or pets: luxury vinyl plank, budgeting for subfloor preparation as a real line rather than an afterthought. Bedrooms and stairs: carpet, where warmth, quiet and footing matter more than durability and the traffic is lighter anyway. Do not carpet a basement or a bathroom, and do not put a floating plank floor on a subfloor you have not checked for flatness.

- Is vinyl plank cheaper than carpet?
- Not up front — mid-grade carpet with pad is usually cheaper installed. Over fifteen years it normally is, because the carpet will have been replaced once or twice by then.
- Can I put vinyl plank over an existing floor?
- Often, if the existing floor is well bonded, flat and not carpet. It cannot go over carpet, and it should not go over a floor that is loose, cupped or out of flatness tolerance without preparation.
- Is vinyl plank good with dogs?
- Yes, far better than carpet — it wipes clean and does not hold odour. Choose a thicker wear layer, since claws will eventually mark a thin one.
