Poured steps are not a slab on a slope — each step sits on the mass of every step below it, so the concrete adds up faster than people expect. A four-step run 48 inches wide is roughly two thirds of a cubic yard. This works out the step count and riser height from your total rise, checks them against code, and prices the concrete and forms.

The formula
Step count = total rise ÷ maximum riser height, rounded up. Riser height = total rise ÷ step count, so every riser is equal. Volume is the sum over each step of tread depth × width × (riser height × step number), because the nth step from the top carries n risers of concrete beneath it.
Worked examples

Four risers at 6 inches. Wide and shallow — the extra width costs concrete in direct proportion, so a 60 in stoop uses a quarter more than a 48 in one.

Nine risers at 7.33 in. Nearly 1.9 cubic yards, because the bottom steps carry the whole stack — this is where poured stairs get expensive fast.
Choosing materials
- Every riser in a flight must be the same height within 3/8 in. Unequal risers are the single most common trip hazard and the most common inspection failure on poured steps.
- The bottom step needs a footing below the frost line, or the whole flight lifts in winter and pulls away from the house.
- Form the risers with a slight backward tilt, about 1 in of nosing overhang. It gives the foot more room without adding tread depth, and it looks right.
- Pour from the bottom step up and let each one stiffen slightly before the next. Pouring the whole flight wet at once pushes the lower forms out.
- Broom the treads across the direction of travel. Smooth concrete on outdoor steps is the reason people fall on them in the first freeze.
Common questions
How do I calculate the number of concrete steps?
Divide the total rise by the maximum riser height — 7.75 in under the IRC — and round up. That gives the step count. Then divide the total rise by that count to get the actual riser height, which will be equal for every step.
What is the code for riser height and tread depth?
The IRC allows a maximum 7.75 in riser and requires a minimum 10 in tread. Risers within a flight must not vary by more than 3/8 in. Outdoor steps usually get deeper treads, 11 or 12 in, because they are walked on in bad footwear and bad weather.
How much concrete do 4 steps take?
A four-step flight 48 in wide with 11 in treads is roughly 0.5 cubic yards before waste. The number climbs steeply with step count, because each additional step sits on top of all the mass below it.
Do concrete steps need a footing?
Yes, below the frost line at the bottom of the flight. Steps poured on grade in a freezing climate heave, and once they lift away from the house the gap collects water and the problem accelerates.
Should I use bags or ready-mix for steps?
Most residential step flights come in under a cubic yard, so bags avoid the short-load fee and let you pour step by step. Above about a yard and a half, ready-mix wins and the whole flight can go in one continuous pour.
Can I pour steps against an existing slab?
Yes, but drill and epoxy dowels into the existing concrete first so the new pour is tied to it. Steps simply butted against a slab separate at the joint within a few freeze-thaw cycles.
