The formula

In-place volume = area × thickness. Weight = volume × density: 150 lb/ft³ for concrete, 145 for asphalt, 70 for roofing, 40 for drywall, 32 for framing. Loose volume adds a bulking allowance, because broken material takes up more room than it did intact. Truckloads are whichever limit binds first — legal weight or bed volume.

Under a ton but a large loose volume — this fills a container by space long before weight becomes an issue.

Choosing materials

  • Concrete and asphalt fill trucks by weight long before they fill them by volume. A tandem truck legally carrying 15 tons of concrete looks less than half full, and that is correct.
  • Roofing is the material that catches people out. A single layer of architectural shingles over 2,000 square feet is about 7 tons — well past most dumpster weight allowances.
  • Bulking is real. A slab broken up occupies 30 to 50% more space than it did in the ground, which is why the container always looks too small once you start loading.
  • Separate materials if you can. Clean concrete goes to a recycler at a fraction of landfill tipping fees, and clean metal is worth money rather than costing it.
  • Check for asbestos and lead before demolishing anything built before 1980. Popcorn ceilings, vinyl floor tile, pipe insulation and old shingles are all common sources, and disposal rules change completely if they are present.

Common questions

How much does a concrete slab weigh?

About 150 lb per cubic foot, so a 4 in slab weighs roughly 50 lb per square foot. A 400 ft² slab is around 10 tons — and the disposal cost follows that weight, not the area.

How much do roofing shingles weigh?

About 250 to 400 lb per square (100 ft²) for a single layer of architectural shingles. A 2,000 ft² roof is roughly 3 tons per layer, and tear-offs are frequently two or three layers deep.

Why do trucks look half empty when hauling concrete?

Because they are at their legal axle weight. A tandem dump truck can carry about 15 tons, which is only about 7 cubic yards of concrete — half its volume capacity. That is correct and unavoidable.

Should I use a dumpster or hire a truck?

A dumpster suits loading by hand over several days. A truck and loader suits demolition finished in a day, and is usually cheaper per ton for heavy material. Concrete and asphalt almost always go by truck to a recycler.

Can I recycle demolition debris?

Clean concrete, asphalt and metal all recycle, and tipping fees at a recycler are typically a fraction of landfill rates. The catch is that loads have to be clean — one pallet of mixed debris can get a whole load reclassified.

Do I need to test for asbestos before demolition?

For anything built before roughly 1980, yes, and in many jurisdictions it is legally required before a permit is issued. Popcorn ceilings, vinyl floor tile, pipe wrap and old roofing are the usual sources, and finding it changes the disposal route entirely.
