Bulk material is priced per ton and delivered per load, and the second number is the one that ruins budgets on tight sites. A job needing 22 tons is two deliveries with normal access and five with a narrow driveway. This counts the loads and shows what the freight adds.

The formula

Ordered quantity = tonnage plus an allowance, because a short delivery costs a whole extra trip. Loads = ordered tons ÷ truck capacity, rounded up. Full-size trucks carry 15 to 20 tons of aggregate; a small truck for restricted access carries about 5.

One load, well under capacity. You pay full freight for a third of a truck, which is why small aggregate orders have such a high effective cost per ton.

Choosing materials

  • Order slightly over. Coming up a ton short at the end of a job costs a full delivery fee for a nearly empty truck, which is always more than the extra material would have cost.
  • Confirm access before ordering, not on delivery day. A loaded tandem needs firm ground, overhead clearance and room to raise the bed — a truck that cannot dump where you need it leaves the pile at the street.
  • Freight is usually a flat fee per load rather than per ton, so the cost per ton falls sharply as the load fills. Two half loads cost the same freight as two full ones.
  • A tri-axle carries more per trip but needs more room to maneuver. On a suburban lot the extra capacity is often unusable, and two tandem loads beat one tri-axle that cannot get in.
  • Ask about a dump trailer for small quantities. Many yards will deliver 3 to 5 tons behind a pickup at a lower rate than sending a full truck.

How many tons does a dump truck carry?

A tandem-axle truck carries about 15 tons of aggregate and a tri-axle about 20. Smaller trucks for restricted sites carry 5 tons or less. Legal axle weight, not bed volume, sets the limit on dense material like stone.

How much does material delivery cost?

Commonly $75 to $150 per load within a normal radius, charged as a flat fee regardless of how full the truck is. That is why partial loads have such a high effective cost per ton.

Should I order extra material?

Yes, a small margin. Running a ton short at the end means paying a full delivery fee for a nearly empty truck. Five to ten percent over is almost always cheaper than a second trip.

What if a truck cannot reach my work area?

The material gets dumped where the truck can go — usually the street or driveway — and you move it. Budget a day of wheelbarrow or skid steer work, or order smaller trucks that can get closer and accept the higher freight.

Will a loaded truck damage my driveway?

Quite possibly. A loaded tandem weighs 25 tons or more and residential driveways are not built for it. Plywood or timber mats spread the load, and it is worth agreeing in advance who is responsible if the concrete cracks.

Is it cheaper to pick material up myself?

For small quantities, sometimes. A half-ton pickup legally carries about half a ton of stone — far less than people load into them. For anything over a ton, two trips in a pickup usually cost more in time than one delivery does in money.
