A backsplash is a small area with an enormous number of edges — outlets, the window, the range hood, the ends of the run. That is why a 24 square foot job takes a whole weekend and why the waste allowance matters more here than on a floor ten times the size.

The formula

Gross area = counter run × backsplash height. Deduct the window and outlet area. Order the remainder plus 15% for cuts. Thinset covers about 85 ft² per bag and grout about 90, so most backsplashes need one of each. Edge trim runs the length of the top edge.

Height nearly doubles the area to 40 ft². Still one bag of each, but a very different look for modest extra cost.

Only 12 ft², but mosaic and a high waste allowance. On a job this small the tile choice barely moves the total — buy what you like.

Choosing materials

  • Eighteen inches is the standard counter-to-cabinet height. Behind a range with no upper cabinet, tiling to the hood or the ceiling looks deliberate; stopping at 18 in there looks like you ran out.
  • Outlet boxes need extenders once tile adds depth. Boxes recessed behind the finished surface are a code violation and an easy inspection failure.
  • Buy one extra box of tile and keep it. Backsplashes get damaged by pans and appliances, and a matching replacement five years later is not findable.
  • Mosaic on mesh sheets goes up faster than individual tile and needs far fewer cuts — but it has many more grout lines, which behind a range means more sealing and more cleaning.
  • Schluter-style metal edge trim finishes the top edge and outside corners properly. Bullnose tile is the traditional alternative and is often unavailable in the tile you want.

How much tile do I need for a backsplash?

Multiply the counter run by the backsplash height, deduct the window and outlet area, and add 15%. A 16 ft run at 18 in is 24 ft² gross, about 21 ft² to order after deductions and waste.

How high should a backsplash be?

Eighteen inches from counter to upper cabinets is standard. Behind a range with no cabinet above, run it to the hood or all the way to the ceiling — stopping partway there looks unfinished.

What does a backsplash cost?

Material for a typical 16 ft kitchen runs $150 to $500 depending on tile. Installed, $600 to $1,400 — labor dominates because the area is small and the cutting is intricate.

How many bags of thinset for a backsplash?

Usually one 50 lb bag, which covers about 85 ft² with a 1/4 in notched trowel. Most backsplashes are well under that, and a bag opened is a bag used.

Do I need to remove the outlets?

Turn off the power and remove the covers, then tile around the boxes. The boxes themselves usually need extenders afterwards so they sit flush with the new surface — that is a code requirement.

Can I tile over an existing backsplash?

Technically yes over sound, flat tile, but it is rarely a good idea: it adds depth at the counter, complicates the outlets, and gives you a substrate you cannot inspect. Removing the old tile is a day well spent.
