Joist span is a lookup, not a formula — the numbers come from published tables and depend on size, spacing, species and load. What the tables do not tell you is the cost of each option, which is usually how the decision actually gets made. This finds the smallest joist that clears your span and prices the whole floor three ways.

The formula

Spans come from the American Wood Council tables (IRC R502.3.1) at 40 psf live load, 10 psf dead load and L/360 deflection — the normal residential floor case. The calculator finds the shallowest joist whose table span exceeds yours, then counts joists as (floor length ÷ spacing) + 1.

Worked examples

14 ft span, 16 in o.c., southern pine

2x10 clears 16.3 ft, comfortably. 2x8 tops out at 12.8 ft, so it does not — the jump from 2x8 to 2x10 is where this span lands.

Still 2x10, but the margin narrows from 2.3 ft to 1.2 ft. Weaker species eat headroom you may want for a tile floor later.

Only 2x12 clears it, and only in southern pine. This is the span where engineered I-joists start to be the cheaper answer.

Choosing materials

  • Clear span is bearing point to bearing point, not wall to wall. A 16 ft room with a beam down the middle has two 8 ft spans, and that difference changes the joist size by two increments.
  • Species matters more than people expect. Southern pine 2x10 at 16 in on center spans 16.3 ft; hem-fir at the same size and spacing manages 15.2 ft. Check what your yard actually stocks before designing to a number.
  • A floor sized right at the table limit meets code and still feels bouncy. The tables limit deflection to L/360, which is a visible amount of movement on a long span. Going up one size is the cheapest comfort upgrade in the house.
  • 19.2 in on center is a real spacing — five joists per 8 ft sheet instead of six or four. It is awkward to lay out but it is in the tables and it saves lumber against 16 in.
  • If nothing in the table works, the answer is engineered lumber or a mid-span beam. I-joists span considerably further than sawn lumber for the same depth, and they come straight.

Common questions

How far can a 2x10 floor joist span?

In southern pine at 16 in on center under a normal residential floor load, about 16 ft 4 in. Douglas fir-larch manages 15 ft 10 in and hem-fir 15 ft 2 in. Tightening to 12 in on center adds roughly 2 ft to each.

What is clear span?

The unsupported distance between bearing points — the face of one support to the face of the next. It is not the room dimension. A beam or bearing wall in the middle of a room halves the clear span and changes everything downstream.

Does joist spacing affect span?

Substantially. A 2x10 in southern pine spans 18 ft at 12 in on center, 16.3 ft at 16 in, and 13.5 ft at 24 in. Tighter spacing buys span, at the cost of more lumber and more labor.

Why does my floor bounce if it meets code?

The span tables limit deflection to L/360, which on a 16 ft span allows over half an inch of movement. That is code-compliant and noticeably springy. Design to L/480 — effectively one size up — if the floor carries tile or you simply want it solid.

When should I use engineered I-joists instead?

When sawn lumber will not reach, when you need consistent depth across a long floor, or when you want to run ducts and pipes through the web. I-joists span further per inch of depth and are straight, but they need specific hangers and cannot be notched freely.

Do these spans work for a deck?

No. These are interior floor spans at 40 psf live load. Deck joists carry a different load combination and are exposed to weather, so use the deck-specific tables in the IRC deck provisions instead.
