Framing at 24 inches on center uses a third fewer studs, which sounds like an obvious saving until you count what it costs back: 5/8 inch drywall instead of 1/2, a springier wall, and less nailing surface for everything that hangs on it. This prices both sides over your actual wall footage.

The formula

Studs = (wall length ÷ spacing) + 1, plus seven per opening for kings, jacks and cripples. The lumber saving is the stud difference times the stud price. The drywall penalty is the sheet count times the 5/8 in upcharge, since 1/2 in board sags and telegraphs at 24 in spacing.

Choosing materials

  • Openings frame identically at either spacing. A wall with many windows saves almost nothing by going to 24 in, because most of its studs are opening framing.
  • 5/8 in drywall is not optional at 24 in centers. Half-inch board waves visibly between studs under raking light, and on ceilings it sags outright.
  • Wider spacing leaves more room for insulation and fewer thermal bridges, which is why advanced framing uses it. On an exterior wall that is a genuine energy benefit, not just a lumber saving.
  • Fewer studs means fewer places to hang cabinets, TVs and grab bars. On a kitchen or bathroom wall, that inconvenience outlasts the saving.
  • Check your code. Most jurisdictions allow 24 in for single-story exterior walls and non-bearing partitions but require 16 in for two-story bearing walls.

Is 24 inch stud spacing cheaper than 16?

In lumber, yes — about a third fewer studs. Net of the 5/8 in drywall it requires, the saving is smaller and on short walls with many openings it can disappear entirely. This page prices both over your actual footage.

Is 24 inch on center allowed by code?

For single-story exterior walls and non-bearing partitions, in most jurisdictions yes. Two-story bearing walls generally require 16 in. Your local amendments govern, and the inspector will check.

Do I need thicker drywall at 24 inch spacing?

Yes, 5/8 in. Half-inch board waves visibly between studs at 24 in and sags on ceilings within a few years. That upcharge is the main cost that offsets the lumber saving.

What is advanced framing?

A set of techniques — 24 in spacing, two-stud corners, insulated headers, stacked framing — that use less lumber and leave more room for insulation. The energy benefit is usually a better argument for it than the material saving.

Does stud spacing affect insulation?

Yes, favorably. Wood conducts heat far better than insulation does, so fewer studs means fewer thermal bridges. A 24 in wall has meaningfully better whole-wall R-value than a 16 in wall with the same batts.

Where do I lose out with 24 inch spacing?

Nailing surface. Cabinets, heavy shelving, TV mounts and grab bars all want a stud where you need one, and at 24 in there is a one-in-two chance there is not. Add blocking during framing wherever you know something will hang.
