Lumber yards quote framing by the piece and hardwood by the board foot, and moving between the two trips people constantly. A board foot is 144 cubic inches of nominal lumber, so a 2x4 is a third of one per linear foot and a 2x12 is a full one. This converts a piece count into both, and prices sizes against each other.

The formula
Board feet per piece = (nominal thickness × nominal width × length in inches) ÷ 144. Multiply by the piece count plus waste. Linear feet = piece length × count. Prices are held for 16 ft stock and scaled to the length you are ordering.

Choosing materials
- Nominal is not actual. A 2x4 measures 1.5 by 3.5 inches, but board feet are calculated on the nominal 2 by 4 — that is the convention every yard uses, and arguing with it does not change the invoice.
- Longer boards cost less per foot up to about 16 ft, then more. Sixteen is the sweet spot for framing stock, and 20 ft carries a premium for handling and freight.
- Order 10% over. Crooked boards get set aside, cut-offs accumulate, and a second delivery for six studs costs more than the studs.
- Ask about a contractor account even for a one-off job. Many yards discount 10 to 20% off shelf price for anything over a few hundred dollars, and they rarely offer it unprompted.
- Check the grade stamp on delivery. Stud grade and #2 are not the same, and a load of the wrong grade is easier to refuse on the truck than to argue about later.
Common questions
What is a board foot?
144 cubic inches of nominal lumber — one inch thick, twelve wide, twelve long, or any equivalent. A 2x4 is 0.667 board feet per foot of length; a 2x12 is 2 board feet per foot.
How do I convert linear feet to board feet?
Multiply the nominal thickness by the nominal width, divide by 12, and multiply by the linear feet. A 2x6 is (2 × 6) ÷ 12 = 1 board foot per linear foot, which makes it the easy one to remember.
Why does board foot use nominal dimensions?
Because it measures the wood before it was surfaced. A 2x4 leaves the mill at a full 2 by 4 and is planed down to 1.5 by 3.5. The trade prices the rough size, and has done for a century.
What length lumber is cheapest per foot?
Usually 16 ft for framing stock. Shorter lengths carry more handling cost per foot and longer ones carry a freight premium. Buying 16 ft and cutting is often cheaper than buying the exact length.
How much lumber waste should I allow?
Ten percent for straightforward framing. Fifteen for a complicated plan with many angles, or when the stock quality is poor and you will be culling boards.
Should I buy from a lumber yard or a big box store?
A yard usually has better grade lumber, will quote a package, delivers properly and discounts volume. Big box is more convenient for small quantities. For anything over a few hundred dollars, get both prices.
