Stud count is length divided by spacing plus one — but the plus-one and the openings are where estimates go wrong. Every door and window takes king studs, jacks and cripples that no simple spacing calculation catches. This counts the field studs, the opening framing and the plates, and shows what 24 in on center saves against 16.

The formula

Field studs = (wall length ÷ spacing) rounded down, plus one for the closing stud. Each opening adds about seven studs: two kings, two jacks and roughly three cripples. Plates = wall length × 3, since a wall has one bottom plate and a doubled top plate.

Above 8 ft the precut studs no longer work, so this switches to 16 ft stock cut to length — a meaningful jump in cost per stud.

Choosing materials

  • Buy precut studs for 8 ft walls. At 92-5/8 in they leave exactly the right height once the three plates are added, and they cost less than cutting down 8 ft stock.
  • 24 in on center uses about a third fewer studs and is allowed for most single-story exterior walls. It also needs thicker sheathing or drywall to avoid visible bowing between studs.
  • Order the plate stock in 16 ft lengths. Splices in a top plate have to land over a stud and be lapped at corners, and long stock means fewer of both.
  • Headers over openings are sized by span and load, not by rule of thumb. A 2x6 header carries a 3 ft window in a non-bearing wall; a bearing wall over a 6 ft opening needs engineered lumber.
  • Add a stud at every corner and every wall intersection for drywall backing. Three-stud corners are traditional; two-stud California corners use less lumber and hold more insulation.

Common questions

How many studs do I need for a 40 ft wall?

At 16 in on center, 31 field studs — 40 ft is 480 in, divided by 16 gives 30, plus one to close the end. Add roughly seven studs per door or window opening, then a waste allowance.

Is 16 or 24 inch stud spacing better?

Sixteen is stiffer and is required for most two-story and load-bearing situations. Twenty-four uses a third less lumber, leaves more room for insulation, and is fine for single-story walls where the code allows it — but it needs 5/8 in drywall to avoid waviness.

What length studs do I need for an 8 foot wall?

92-5/8 in precut studs. Add a 1.5 in bottom plate and two 1.5 in top plates and you land at 97-1/8 in, which gives a finished 8 ft ceiling with the floor and ceiling finishes.

How many studs does a window opening need?

Two king studs running full height, two jack studs supporting the header, and cripples above the header and below the sill — usually about seven studs in total for a typical window, more for a wide one.

How do I calculate top and bottom plates?

Three times the wall length: one bottom plate and a doubled top plate. Buy it in 16 ft lengths, lap the top plate at corners and intersections, and land every splice over a stud.

How much lumber waste should I allow for framing?

Ten percent is standard. Straight production walls come in under that; a complicated plan with many corners, angles and openings will use more. Crooked stock you set aside comes out of this allowance too.
